WinRAR 4.20 final released!

Release date: 14.06.2012

Compression and Decompression are much faster now!

The current version has improved the speed significantly compared to older versions of WinRAR.

Berlin, 14.06.2012 – win.rar GmbH and RARLAB are proud to present to the public the final version of WinRAR 4.20. Users will realize that the compression speed is now up to three times higher than in previous versions and the improvements are valid for both RAR and ZIP compression.

Speed Improvements for RAR Compression

As quad core CPUs are becoming mainstream and more affordable, users pay more attention to multi-core efficiency. The primary target in the development of WinRAR 4.20 has been improving this efficiency.

By utilizing more RAM and improvements in CPU the RAR compression speed in even single-core mode CPU has been raised considerably. However the main optimization has been made for multi-core mode. For the typical data mix the speed of RAR compression can be up to twice as fast as WinRAR 4.11. Poorly compressing data such as .jpg and .mp3 even three times faster. The speed difference between the current version and previous versions amplifies with larger numbers of cores and types of data.

"As the market leader our ultimate priority is to continue to set the standard for compression software and, in every new version, to ensure that the needs of our growing global user base are met or exceeded. The primary focus in the development of WinRAR 4.20 has been to optimize for better utilization of multi-core processors. As a result we have achieved a substantially higher compression rate and further increased efficiency. Just another step in the right direction,” says Burak Canboy, win.rar GmbH’s CEO.

Speed improvements for ZIP Compression

The ZIP Code has been rewritten and is now using similar techniques as in RAR compression, which is making WinRAR 4.2 ZIP compression faster than WinRAR 4.11, even in single-core mode by about 70%. By utilizing the multi-core support in 4.20 ZIP, can be up to 3 times faster than 4.11.

Additional improvements within the final version of WinRAR 4.20

The RAR format continues to offer many advantages like archiving, conversion, security and recovery functions. Recovery functions now also access multiple core processors in order to achieve time-savings when repairing files.
