WinRAR 7.10 Released – A Major Update Featuring Dark Mode, Performance Enhancements and Improved Security
Berlin, February 18, 2025: RARLAB.COM and win.rar GmbH have officially released the latest version of WinRAR 7.10, introducing a wide range of new features, performance improvements, and enhanced security options. Among the most anticipated updates is Dark Mode support, a highly requested feature that has now been fully implemented. Additionally, faster compression speeds, improved navigation, and enhanced privacy controls have been introduced to provide a smoother and more efficient file management experience.
Highlights of the new version include:
Dark Mode Compatibility
With this update, Dark Mode has been seamlessly integrated, allowing WinRAR to automatically adapt to Windows' color settings. Users who prefer a darker interface to reduce eye strain or for aesthetic reasons can now activate the feature under "Settings/Interface". The option to synchronize Dark Mode with Windows settings or enable it manually within WinRAR ensures a consistent look across applications.
Performance Boost with Large Memory Pages
Significant performance improvements have been introduced with the implementation of Large Memory Pages. By allocating memory in 2 MB pages instead of the default 4 KB, compression and extraction speeds have been optimized, particularly for large archives. This feature, accessible through "Settings/System" or the -mlp command line switch, requires the "Lock pages in memory" privilege. If this privilege is unavailable, WinRAR provides assistance in assigning it to the user account, with activation taking effect after a system restart.
Enhanced Privacy Controls with Mark of the Web
Privacy has been enhanced, with the introduction of the "Zone value only" option in the "Settings/Security" menu. This feature allows users to limit the amount of Mark of the Web data attached to their archives, reducing exposure of detailed file source information when sharing compressed files. For command-line users, Mark of the Web propagation can be controlled via the -om[-|1][=list] switch.
Navigation and Interface Enhancements
A more user-friendly layout has been introduced in the General Settings dialog, which has now been split into two sections: "Interface" and "System". Additionally, vertical tabs have replaced horizontal ones for improved usability. Further refinements have been made to the Windows 11 context menu, where compression profiles are now displayed above extraction commands for easier access. Separator lines have also been added to clearly distinguish command groups, making navigation more intuitive and efficient.
Compatibility Update
With this release, support for Windows Vista has been discontinued, and WinRAR now requires Windows 7 x64 or later. However, 32-bit self-extracting modules remain available within the 64-bit package to ensure compatibility for users requiring legacy support.
Additional Enhancements and Bug Fixes
This update also brings several performance improvements, including faster extraction of NTFS-compressed files, more efficient handling of recovery records, and better multi-processor utilization for higher compression speeds. In addition, stability and usability fixes have been applied, addressing issues related to semi-solid archive handling and nested archive security settings.
